Why I don’t use plastic bags at the grocery store

I had a business trip to Nevada. It was in Las Vegas. To make the trip bearable, I needed to take advantage of seeing the natural wonders of Nevada for the first time while there. I would not have gone otherwise!

We rented a car to go to the Valley of Fire State Park. It was a wonderful trip. But I was utterly stunned during the hour long drive that mile after mile of barbwire fencing surrounding cattle fields was completely covered, as if wrapping a house in insulation, with wind-blown plastic bags. It’s one of those images I will never be able to unsee!!

Plastic bags caught up in a barbed-wire fence

Many of you by now are familiar with my long-standing involvement in environmental activism. Plastic takes hundreds of years to break down in the environment. It’s like gold. All the gold ever mined on earth is still here. The same with plastic, but in increasingly environmentally dangerous forms as it breaks down, but does not disappear.

If you have never heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch click here.

If you want to see just how dangerous plastic has become to our environment, I have enclosed a link to a documentary I first saw on Netflix called “Plastic Paradise”. I warn you, it is graphic and disturbing. Plastic still has a place. So many medical devices require the flexibility of plastic. Carrying your groceries to your car does not!
