What “FSU” means in Hebrew

This is a partial repeat of a previous post adding a humorous additional memory to it.

While sitting in the student union that day (See the story “The Avalanche” in the post “What Me, Focus?”) there were a couple of Israeli’s. It came up I wad finally going back to college after being a dropout for five years. Thay asked where I was going?

I said,

“FSU.”

The two mid-Easterner’s fell on the floor clutching their sides in pain from laughing so hard. We asked what was so funny?

“In Hebrew FS (effes) means “Nothing”. You’ve enrolled in Nothing University!”

In Hebrew, Efes (אֶפֶס) primarily means “zero,” “nothing,” “nought,” or “nil”. It is the standard word used in Modern Hebrew for the numerical digit 0.

Beyond just the number zero, the word has deeper, ancient, and contextual meanings:

  • Non-existence/Nothingness: It is used to describe a total lack or absence of something (e.g., Efes savlanut – zero patience)
