Nixon was the ultimate Oedipal figure in American politics. He did so many good things, but his pride led to his downfall. He negotiated SALT I (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) with Brezhnev, and persuaded the Senate to ratify it, the first reduction of nuclear arms in history. He signed the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. He created the Environmental Protection Agency. As a licensed health insurance agent since 1976, and an unabashed liberal (there will be a post about that), the one that most significantly stands out to me is his appeal to a joint session of Congress to pass his National Health Care proposal on February, 1971. Yes, Nixon, a Republican president. It is well worth reading it. It was an amazing proposal.
