One way I try to make a difference is by sharing information about organizations I support. So this does not get missed further down, if you would like to have a sample back copy of any of these just email me (in Contact us) and I will mail you one or all. For one thing it will help me use up postage stamps (if you have never received anything from me you will get it once you do! ) In the past some of you may have received gifts of subscriptions to Nutrition Action, Mother Jones, Hightower’s The Lowdown and Funny Times (this last is not exactly a political, but FUNNY!). I am sorry if for whatever reason you were not one of the recipients. I usually send these singly. Circumstances currently make me feeling I need a Trifecta plus One. So I hope you will support Mother Jones, Nutrition Action & Jim Hightower’s Lowdown, and subscribe to Funny Times because right now we all can use all the humor we can get.
MOTHER JONES
Mother Jones (MJ) may be the only truly purely investigative journal on the left today (although I am pleased to say that the New York Times, the Washington Post and the New Yorker have really stepped up to the plate). But MJ is truly in the tradition of Sinclair Lewis’ The Jungle and I. F. Stone, to my mind the last muckraking American journalist. Please look him up. Stone was the only American journalist to challenge President Lyndon B. Johnson‘s account of the Gulf of Tonkin incident. MJ is a non-profit foundation dedicated to uncovering the truth and exposing lies & it costs very little.
Jim Hightower and The Lowdown
Jim was the Commissioner of Agriculture in the administration of the last Democratic Governor of Texas, Ann Richards. He is a throwback to the true Progressive era in rural American agriculture of the early 20th century. But what is so good about the Lowdown is it actually gives YOU what you need to take action yourself, the ONLY thing that will defeat the Empire of Evil of the Republicans, and yes, some DINO’s as well. It too costs ridiculously little to subscribe to and support.
NUTRITION ACTION
Do you find nutrition labels on food helpful? Are you glad fast-food joints now display per serving calorie information? Have you notice Added Sugar on food labels? Have you noticed packages now show the total calories for the whole package, not just per serving? Well, thank The Center for Science the Public Interest (CSPI) who almost single handedly are responsible for all these changes. It was founded 50 years ago as a research and advocacy organization to improve public health through improved nutrition. The take no corporate or even government grants. And no advertising. Their work is 100% member supported. I credit them for my good health and for having raised my health consciousness tremendously on what goes into me!
THE FUNNY TIMES
Thomas Nast (September 27, 1840 – December 7, 1902) was a German-born American caricaturist and editorial cartoonist often considered to be the “Father of the American Cartoon”. The Funny Times upholds that tradition, and I think political cartooning has more of an effect on people’s thoughts than may be commonly recognized. Supporting the Funny Times in turn supports our Political Cartoonists. I send an old issue as many of the cartoons are frankly timelessly hilarious, and the topical cartoons from an earlier time give you an idea of what you will receive on current affairs.
